NATIONAL GRASSROOTS RADIO CONFERENCE
IN KANSAS CITY THIS WEEK
August 15, 2011, Kansas City, Missouri. – Hosted by community radio station KKFI 90.1 FM and Friends of Community Media, a media-reform group, the 15th annual Grassroots Radio Conference will take place from August 18-21, 2011 at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church, 4501 Walnut Street, Kansas City, Missouri.
The conference will attract people from community radio stations all over the United States and
feature workshops, keynote speakers, entertainment, and celebrations.
Keynote speakers include Sylvia Richardson, President of AMARC (World Broadcasters Association, North American division); Loris Ann Taylor, Executive Director of Native Public Media; and J.R. Valrey from Block Radio. On Friday Evening, Mumia Abu Jamal, Host of Prison Radio, questionably incarcerated in Pennsylvania for murder, will address the conference via a telephone linkup.
There are about 200 community radio stations around the U.S. and many more around the world. Once a year they come together to share information to make their stations better and improve radio shows. Last year over 150 radio people attended. There is a $125 registration fee for the 3-day affair which includes meals, all workshops, entertainment, and speakers.
Attendees will meet other community radio people from around the country, share ideas, conduct radio interviews, attend interesting workshops, learn about podcasting, research getting low-power FM station licenses, and attend entertainment functions.
